Sellafield wins Apprentice recruitment award
Friday 16th July 2010Energy company Sellafield received a top accolade for its apprenticeship scheme at last night’s Apprenticeship Awards, organised by the National Apprenticeship Service.
The award recognises the firm’s success in using apprentices to meet the needs of its business and the community it operates in.
The Cumbria-based firm has recruited apprentices for more than 50 years, currently employing 320 with a view to increasing this number in the future.
As the most complex nuclear site in the country, apprenticeship programmes deliver staff with the skills it requires to remain at the forefront of engineering and manufacturing technologies.
Sellafield, named Macro Employer of the Year, was among eight winners at the awards ceremony, which took place in Westminster.
Other successes include Rosy Apple Childcare, a nursery school in Preston; City of Lincoln Council; and food manufacturing apprentice, Sunè Brunton, from Martins Foods Limited, who develops products for major supermarket chains.
John Hayes, Minister for Further Education, Skills and Lifelong Learning, said: "Apprenticeships play a huge role in providing the skills we need to build an advanced economy. They help get young people into work and boost productivity and improve competitiveness.
"I am just about to take on an apprentice myself, so I know the benefits they can bring to the workplace. The Apprenticeship Awards recognise and celebrate these benefits as well as the hard work of individuals and the commitment of employers to invest in their workforce."

End of beginning as downturn slows slightly
The seasonally-adjusted CIPS/Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 42.9 in April from 39.1 the previous month, but was lower than last year’s figure of 49.7. Despite remaining below the neutral 50.0 mark (a figure less than 50 indicates a contraction) for the 13th month running, the PMI moved further from February’s joint survey record low.
