Could LinkedIn growth spell end for recruiters?
Friday 11th June 2010Professional social-networking site LinkedIn this week gained its four-millionth UK member.
The landmark comes less than eight months after it hit the three million mark.
LinkedIn's growth means it has one member joining every second worldwide and is hugely popular among professionals looking to establish their online identity, connect with trusted contacts, share information and take advantage of business and career opportunities.
The company believes that more than a third of UK professionals are now on LinkedIn.
LinkedIn Europe Managing Director Kevin Eyres said: "UK professionals from all industries are adopting LinkedIn with accelerating speed. Driving this growth is the increasing realisation of the advantages of having your social and professional identities separate online.
"In our working lives, the Internet is now often our first destination when we’re looking for advice or expertise; it makes sense to have your skills and experience available and up-to-date so you can be discovered by your next opportunity."
But as increasing numbers of people use their LinkedIn contacts to get new employment could this ultimately spell the end for recruitment agencies serving professional classes? Have your say using the comment section below

Posted By Sean on Monday 14th June 2010 09:09:41Far from taking business away from recruiters I have actually found it has helped me secure more business. It is easier to make connections with senior management you would have struggled to initially and has also helped me gain overseas contacts which I wouldn’t have found if it wasn’t for this site. You will always get a certain amount of candidates being pro-active in finding jobs themselves through Linkedin but fair play to them – if you work smart there is plenty of work to be sourced through it.

End of beginning as downturn slows slightly
The seasonally-adjusted CIPS/Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 42.9 in April from 39.1 the previous month, but was lower than last year’s figure of 49.7. Despite remaining below the neutral 50.0 mark (a figure less than 50 indicates a contraction) for the 13th month running, the PMI moved further from February’s joint survey record low.
