Thousands of health jobs face axe
Monday 26th April 2010NHS spending cuts have put thousands of jobs at risk as health services chiefs try to save up to £20billion.
Details from 26 trusts show at least 5600 jobs in danger, according to data released by the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) at its annual conference in Bournemouth.
It said that cuts to services and staff were "becoming a reality across the health service as some trusts look to slash budgets".
And the union believes that its figures are on the "conservative side".
The RCN also found the cuts were creating major staffing problems as 92% of respondents said patient care was being compromised by short staffing at least several times a month.
A third said it happened on most shifts.
Half of respondents said they had a recruitment freeze in place.
Around 40% were banned from using agency nurses and 22% said nursing posts on their wards had already been cut.

End of beginning as downturn slows slightly
The seasonally-adjusted CIPS/Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 42.9 in April from 39.1 the previous month, but was lower than last year’s figure of 49.7. Despite remaining below the neutral 50.0 mark (a figure less than 50 indicates a contraction) for the 13th month running, the PMI moved further from February’s joint survey record low.
