Oil and gas workers strike liquid gold
Tuesday 23rd March 2010By Mike Jones
Oil and gas professionals are better paid compared to workers in the majority of other industries, according to a survey by Hays Oil & Gas in partnership with Oil & Gas Job Search.
The average oil & gas professional in the UK earns £92,000, compared to a UK salary average of around £25,000. Added to this, over two-thirds of employers surveyed are planning to offer salary increases over the next 12 months.
The Hays Oil & Gas Global Salary Guide is based on more than 7000 responses and presents the average salaries of oil and gas professionals working across more than 30 countries and 20 discipline areas. The results prove that oil and gas professionals have remained a valuable commodity despite the global financial crisis.
Currently across the UK demand for oil & gas professionals is increasing and in London there is high demand for senior level exploration geophysicists and reservoir engineers.
Eliot Davies, Director at Hays Oil & Gas, said: "With an average permanent salary in the UK nearly four times as much as the average UK employee, oil and gas professionals are earning a premium. Although the UK isn’t in the top five highest paying countries; Australia, US, Azerbaijan, Canada and the Netherlands pay their oil & gas professionals the highest sums, it is an attractive option for candidates. Oil and gas is truly a global industry, with professionals migrating around the world in search of the next project, and our survey clearly confirms this. Professionals in the industry are well paid, highly skilled and highly mobile."

End of beginning as downturn slows slightly
The seasonally-adjusted CIPS/Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 42.9 in April from 39.1 the previous month, but was lower than last year’s figure of 49.7. Despite remaining below the neutral 50.0 mark (a figure less than 50 indicates a contraction) for the 13th month running, the PMI moved further from February’s joint survey record low.
