New skills focus to boost key sectors
Wednesday 17th March 2010By Mike Jones
Programmes to ensure the UK economy is supplied with the skills needed to fuel the growth of key new industries in the coming years have been launched by the Government.
New National Skills Academies will be developed to cover five new sectors – rail engineering; logistics; green building services; biotechnology and composites – funded by £12million of public investment matched by the private sector.
In addition, the National Skills Academy for Power is now ready to open for business, with a further £2.9million Government funding. Together, these academies will aim to attract more than 300,000 learners to the training programmes they oversee over the next four years.
Business Secretary Lord Mandelson said: "Ambitious government projects like High Speed Rail and new civil nuclear power need a range of new skills to make them a reality.
"We are investing in the industries where employers’ need is greatest – tens of thousands of people working in these industries, the consumers they serve and the UK as a whole will see the benefit.
"New academies and investment by employers, in partnership with colleges and the education sector, will create the best training that gives people the skills they need to boost their careers and drive the economy forward."

End of beginning as downturn slows slightly
The seasonally-adjusted CIPS/Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 42.9 in April from 39.1 the previous month, but was lower than last year’s figure of 49.7. Despite remaining below the neutral 50.0 mark (a figure less than 50 indicates a contraction) for the 13th month running, the PMI moved further from February’s joint survey record low.
