Interims challenge consultancies for PR work
Wednesday 3rd February 2010By Mike Jones
Interim managers are increasingly challenging PR consultancies for project work as well as being sought by companies looking to bolster their in-house communications teams.
More than half (54%) of companies polled in a recent survey said they would consider using an interim manager in place of hiring a traditional PR consultancy.
In addition, more than 60% of companies say they have used, or are considering using, an interim manager as a way of strengthening their own in-house corporate communications or PR team.
These are the key findings of a research study commissioned by Interim Performers, part of VMA Group and The Counsel House, which investigated the factors driving the uptake of interim management within corporate communications and PR. The survey polled senior corporate communications professionals, mainly from FTSE companies, as well as interim managers to establish viewpoints from both sides of the interim management equation.
Jules Shelley, a senior consultant at Interim Performers, said: "Market sentiment appears to be improving, but we expect corporates and interims to remain flexible in their approach and with regard to rates. The fact that experienced interim communicators are increasingly being sought for project work reflects wider market trends towards cost cutting and the need to use smarter resourcing solutions."

End of beginning as downturn slows slightly
The seasonally-adjusted CIPS/Markit Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) rose to 42.9 in April from 39.1 the previous month, but was lower than last year’s figure of 49.7. Despite remaining below the neutral 50.0 mark (a figure less than 50 indicates a contraction) for the 13th month running, the PMI moved further from February’s joint survey record low.
